Like any type of roof, a flat roof requires a structural framework. In the case of flat roofs, it is made up of timbers, more commonly known as joists, which help distribute the weight. These joists are then made watertight by a covering of protective rubber or felt.
It’s important to remember that a flat roof is not completely level. To avoid pooling water, there will usually be some degree of slope to the roof, however, it is hardly perceptible when you look up at it.
